Goodbye Mayer, Hello Mayer!

In with the old and out with the new! Today with some sadness I pack up my last Silver Sky Lunar Ice Limited to be shipped off to it’s new owner. With that my last John Mayer signature piece is gone, but just as quickly the funds are turned around and put into another John Mayer signature piece, in this case an amp. The PRS J-MOD 100.

After selling my PRS HXDA, I have been down to one amp. While my Bloomfield Drive is still my favorite amp (especially through the Two-Rock 2×12) I have finally received my GigRig G3 (after 5 months!) and am dying to try out some wet/dry through their new ability to split the signal anywhere in the chain. A J-MOD came up at a great price, and the deal was done.

Now that I’ve got a 100 watt amp coming, I may decide to keep the 40 watt Bloomfield combo, and just swap the chassis into a head case or try and find someone who wants to swap one for one.

Either way, more information and videos to come on the J-MOD when it finally arrives.

Until then, buy a J-MOD here.

Custom Pedalboards

As electric guitar enthusiasts, we all like our effects pedals. A collection that typically starts with a drive pedal, then maybe a delay, a looper and so on. Eventually we all get to the point where the pedals sitting on the floor are too wieldy and need to be organized and locked down either for transport or simply for our mental sanity, and so begins the search for a pedalboard. After many years and probably a dozen or so pedalboards, I have decided to start making custom boards that fit my need, and maybe yours.

The Flatboard

This board is perfect for the player who wants a clean demo area for making videos, or for an enthusiast who likes to grab a couple pedals off the shelf at random and doesn’t need all of their pedal available at any second. It’s fully carpeted (even the bottom) so that it can be placed on a desk/table without worrying of scratching while also making it Velcro compatible for temporary but solid layout.

Single Level Hinged

When players start to look for a cleaner option, they begin to look at hinged-top pedal boards that let them hide all the power and wiring, but still allows you get in there and make changes easily. These self-contained boards are nice for gigging musicians as well since all the wires are kept safe and secure and you plug into the board itself making multi-amp setups a breeze.

The downsize to these boards comes when you mix in a pedal loop switcher or base mounted power supplies. In this case the large hinged top means having to run long cables to the back of the board then along the bottom of the top to allow the top to open while keeping the cables in place. Custom cabling and small power supplies that can be mounted to the bottom become very important increasing cost.

Two Level Clamshell Hinded

In order to minimize the effect of a hinged top, while still allowing many pedals in a small area, a two level clamshell style board allows for the board to split in the middle meaning shorter cable runs and less chance for noise to creep in. Modular power supplies and custom wiring is still a good idea if using loop switchers, but wiring is a good bit easier to handle.

Ordering a Custom Board

If you’re interested in ordering a custom board, just email me through the contact page with your contact information and what kind of board you’re interested in. A list of pedals and any needs will be discussed so we can get you exactly what you need. Otherwise I will be building more boards in the future and putting them up for sale.

If you want a fully setup board, I can do that too. We can discuss wiring, any additional power supplies, switchers or custom options you would like to see on your dream board.

Guitar Tone Pro is now setup on Patreon!

This doesn’t mean that there’s going to be a lot of exclusive content or that anything is going to be taken away from the general public, so don’t worry. In fact what it means is that more content will be coming to everyone, after all gear cost money. Along with more reviews and better recording equipment, it means more of a chance to give back.

Can’t afford to support the channel and your own gear addiction? No problem, as always the links around this site to Reverb or any other merchant will kick back a little referral money to me with no additional cost to you. So site back, enjoy and maybe buy some gear on Reverb.

The Great Gear Sell-Off!

After many years of buying and collecting gear, and especially the last couple years of intense gear flipping to fund my acquisition addiction, I have decided to downsize. Many separate paths have culminated in this decision, call it maturity, or perhaps insanity. I’ll take either.

Like many guitarists, I started out by collecting as many pedals as I could afford. In the last couple years, I had taken to flipping pedals (buy low sell high) to make a small margin on them in order to fund more purchases. As I built up a larger fund I figured it was better to flip a few expensive pedals instead of many cheap ones, hitting a peak where I had two Klon Centaurs in my possession, each worth almost 2 grand. While I am by no means a profession, I have played long enough to be able to appreciate the quality and tone that allows these legendary pedals to command equally legendary prices.

Also around this time my incredibly awesome wife allowed me to make two purchases within the same year (birthday and Christmas gifts), a Two Rock Studio Pro 35 and a John Mayer Signature Stratocaster. These were both a big step up in quality as well as good investments. The Studio Pro was found locally through EBay at an amazing price, and the John Mayer Strat was picked up just a few weeks after he announced that he was no longer going to work with Fender which would mean the end of his signature series and the prices starting to rise.

So not only did I get the bug for getting better gear instead of just more gear, but also at this point of my life I decided to start simplifying my life and getting rid of clutter that I don’t need anymore. This comes about because I two young daughters who I want to spend my time with and so I don’t have time to spend as much on hobbies anymore. Also I have started getting more serious about my financial future and a design to move across county, likely to a small house, so downsizing is going to happen at some point.

That’s pretty much the roads leading to where I am now, selling off a majority of my gear. Starting with pedals, but eventually many of my amps and guitars as well. The goal is to keep a choice selection of pedals, maybe an amp or two and a guitar or two, but mostly to sell them off to fund two major purchases. The first major purchase is going to be a new amplifier, specifically Two Rock’s flagship, the new Classic Reverb Signature. The other piece of gear I plan to acquire is a vintage Stratocaster. Specifically I will be looking for an early 60’s Pre-CBS strat, preferably refinished with maybe a 5-way switch and refretted to make it more affordable. At this price range (quite possibly into 5-digit land), I am looking for a guitar that speaks to me, must be all original wood, mostly original hardware and all original pickups. A guitar that replaces all my other strats and that I will keep and play for the rest of my life.

Let me know if there is anything you want, otherwise it will mostly all be for sale on Reverb.

First just let me say I am sorry, but this isn’t the shipment with the Carpe Diems, that one will hopefully be here in the next day or two. What this one is, is a batch of ding and dent pedals that I requested so I could review them for you guys so you could see some of the other wonderful pedals available from Fire Custon Shop.

Reviews of each pedal will go up in the next couple of days so check back for more. But until then, here are some shots of the unboxing.

Fire Custom Shop Carpe Diem Pre-Orders

Carpe DiemProbably like you, I saw this incredible pedal on the YouTube show That Pedal Show and I knew I had to have one. I spent a lot of time looking around the web trying to find one for sale but had no luck so I took the next step and had my Brazilian friend help me contact the company directly. After some time and a lot of communication, I am proud to say that I am now working with them and have my first order of pedals coming near the end of the month (Sept ’16). In the order are a variety of pedals, include the awesome Bobber Wah used by Richie Kotzen, but primarily a good stock of Carpe Diems.

I am opening up a pre-order for 10 of the Carpe Diems at 10% off, 5 here direct from my site (sold through my online store System 1:10) and 5 on Reverb.com. Delivery on these pedals will be the day after I receive the stock of pedals, due near the end of the month or beginning of October.

Check back here for updates on delivery time and additional pedals for sale.

UPDATE: Pedals are all sold out and no more will be coming in. Thanks to all of you who ordered a pedal.
